Hearing Test In Sydney
A hearing test is a subjective assessment on your ability to hear sounds at different pitches (frequencies) and loudness (decibels). It provides a snapshot of your hearing at the time of assessment.
What to Expect in a Hearing Test
1. Case History
Firstly, we want to understand what difficulties you are currently experiencing with your hearing. This includes any past and present medical conditions which may contribute to your hearing.
2. Otoscopy
Using a small light called an otoscope, we will check your outer ear and canal to check status of all structures and if there is any wax build up. You can learn more about this procedure on our Ear Wax Removal page.
3. Pure Tone Audiometry
You will hear a range of sounds presented at different pitches and levels and be asked to indicate when you have heard the sound. Each ear will be tested separately. This will determine the softest levels you can hear at each pitch.
4. Speech Testing
In this test, you will hear short words and be asked to repeat them aloud. This test helps us understand how your hearing is when in conversations with others.
5. Tympanometry
This test involves introducing a small amount of pressure to assess the status of your middle ear (ear drum, ossicles). It also provides an indication if there is a hole in your ear drum and if difficulties in hearing is attributed to significant wax build up.
6. Results & Discussion
A clear explanation of your results and recommended next steps. If needed, we may recommend suitable Hearing Aid options.
